Numeracy

Our Numeracy teaching is based upon the principles and recommendations of The National Numeracy Strategy. All pupils participate in a Numeracy hour each day. The lessons begin with quick-fire mental/oral activities and are followed by an interactive whole-class session. Group or individual work may follow. This is supplemented by additional materials and homework, when it is felt that children will benefit from extension work or further reinforcement. Children are encouraged to learn their tables and practise their number skills.

The following four approaches are incorporated into the work planned:

  • Teacher-led work.
  • Group work and discussion.
  • Practical work.
  • Individual work and private study.

The National Numeracy Strategy pilot plans and the Abacus scheme provide the basis for much of the work undertaken. Mathematical activities will sometimes form the basis of homework tasks.
