About Us

schoolNewark Hill Primary School is situated in a pleasant residential location, and was first opened in 1959. Our school admits up to sixty children each year, and has a total capacity of four hundred and twenty pupils. There are six classes in Key Stage One and eight classes in Key Stage Two.

During the past five years the building has been extensively modernised, as part of an improvement programme led by our governors. Nearly a million pounds has been spent on ensuring that the buildings are able to provide for the exciting and challenging curriculum that we offer our pupils. The multi-sensory room and fantastic new community and special needs rooms are just a few of the renovations that have been completed recently.

The Key Stage One area of the school has, in addition to the classrooms, a library and reading area, a dance and drama studio,  a staffroom and a large open-plan area for Early Year’s activities. In Key Stage Two are the administration areas, music room and computer suite, a home economics room and a newly refitted library for fiction and non-fiction loans. Linking the two parts of the building is a large assembly hall, which is shared by all classes for Physical Education and assemblies. Meals are prepared on the premises and are served in both halls.

The extensive grounds contain two large playing fields, two separate playgrounds and areas of grass and shrubs. Seating areas and adventure play equipment have been provided in recent months by our       hard-working Friends Association. This equipment has proven very popular with the children. Our environmental area has been developed within the grounds - this contains a pond, hedging, trees, shrubs and wild flowers, and provides a rich resource for work, addressing many areas of the curriculum.

School Organisation

Year groups are arranged in pairs of single age classes of mixed ability. Each class teacher is responsible for the welfare of the children in their class.

Lessons are taught using a range of individual, group and whole class methods. Children are able to work at their own rate and are encouraged to realise their full potential. A wide range of carefully chosen materials, activities and experiences are offered, based on the requirements of the National Curriculum and the agreed syllabus for the teaching of Religious Education.

In some classes, parents or volunteers help teachers on a rota basis. For this, a Criminal Record Bureau check is required, to help ensure the safety of our pupils.
